Visiting North Fork’s Beautiful Wine Trail in Long Island

April 30, 2023

Over the past four years, my husband and I have been blessed with frequent travels to Long Island, New York to visit our son at his school. We have made wonderful friends through his schoolmates and celebrated lots of events like parents weekends, birthdays and graduation. In April, we were invited to travel again to celebrate some birthdays for my son and his friend. What better way to celebrate them than to visit some wineries over the weekend!

I was so surprised to learn that Long Island has a wine trail in the North Fork area, but I shouldn’t have been. The climate of eastern Long Island is reminiscent of northern Spain with cool temperatures, foggy days and a beautiful coastline. My son’s friend had met another young man during his sea year that was from this area and his family owned a winery, Sannino Vineyard. We connected with him and his family that weekend and were treated so kind and generously by Francesco’s parents. I really connected with his mother, Lisa, since they also enjoy camping and have their own RV.

Their vineyard, which also houses a bed and breakfast, is beautiful with a warm ambiance and their wines are delightful. I’ve since ordered some of their wines online because drinking wines from a place you have visited always tastes better because you also get to drink in the memories again. On that day, we started out with a sampling of some of their best, most popular wines and enjoyed some charcuterie. The Ambitious Rose was a crowd favorite along with the Cabernet Sauvignon. I tend to like smooth, oaky and bold flavors so the Cabernet Sauvignon was my personal favorite. I won’t do an official wine review since I’m a novice but I can share that all of the 8 adults loved everything we sampled. The tour was especially fun since the only behind the scenes wine tour I’ve ever attended was in Rioja, Spain at the Marques de Riscal.

We also visited Sparkling Pointe Vineyards and Winery on the Long Island Wine Trail. If you enjoy sparkling wine this winery must be placed on your list. The wines we sampled were light and fruity but also the atmosphere of this vineyard was inviting. It was one of the most visited tasting rooms that we sampled that weekend so make sure with all of the options on the wine trail that you book reservations. They can all get busy quickly.

We rented a beautiful AirBnB near Greenport, NY. We absolutely loved this place because of its comfortable bed, seating everywhere and beautiful outside. Plus, the table in the dining room was perfect for some games, which I learned I now love Cards Against Humanity! (Thank you to the AirBnB host that had these fun games.) Some of our favorite places to eat when we stayed in nearby Greenport Village were Claudios on the waterfront and Lucharitos Taqueria and Bar, where we had great margaritas!

I really want to venture back there again in my Airstream, LJ. I noticed a quaint campground near Greenport called Eastern Long Island Campground. This could be a new trip to plan so I can explore more wineries and visit Sannino Vineyard again.

  • I’m not much of a foodie and don’t drink wine, but the Airbnb looks so nice, comfortable and inviting. I’d love to stay there.

What! I can’t believe this gorgeous wine tour is literally in my backyard! thank you so much for posting this

  • I love wine trails. Seeing how the wine is made, sampling it and enjoying a good meal if the winery has a restaurant. And to have a b&b – what a great way to immerse yourself in the wine trail.
