Traveling to the western part of North Carolina is one of my favorite drives. Watching the hills peek over the roadway as I get closer and closer to the beautiful mountain range holds so much excitement for me. The anticipation literally builds as the mountains grow larger and the roads become steeper. As I’ve learned to tow my Airstream, traveling up those hills and mountains requires lots of focus and attention to my brakes. Recently, I was challenged at my first campground that included my first steep climb at Mama Gertie’s Hideaway Campground in Swannanoa, NC.
I was traveling to that end of the state for a client visit and decided to arrive a day early to enjoy the mountains and some fly fishing. If you’re searching for the ideal camping experience that combines comfort, adventure, and proximity to exciting attractions, Mama Gertie’s Hideaway Campground near Asheville, NC, is your perfect destination. Nestled in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains, this picturesque campground offers a unique experience for campers seeking a blend of tranquility and adventure.
Camping in Style
Mama Gertie’s Hideaway Campground provides a range of accommodation options, but for those who seek a touch of luxury in the great outdoors, their campground offers amazing views of the Blue Ridge Mountains. If you book a premium campsite, you’ll have a treat of being right on a mountainside where you can wake up to stunning mountain vistas. There were many walking trails at the campground that were very challenging due to the steep roadway. If you need to take a break to catch your breath, there are quaint swings that you can relax in while viewing the peaceful mountains. I traveled in style with my Airstream but if you like glamping while being more in tune with nature, you can book a stay in one of their Yurts or pitch a tent nearby. There are so many ways to enjoy Mama Gertie’s!
Local Attractions
Asheville, known for its vibrant arts scene, eclectic food culture, and breathtaking mountain views, is just a short drive away from Mama Gertie’s Hideaway. I was there for business purposes in some nearby smaller towns so didn’t have a chance to visit any attractions. I would love to return to view more of the local attractions that make Asheville famous. Next on my list would be spending a day exploring the historic Biltmore Estate, marveling at the artistic vibes of the River Arts District, or hiking the trails of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
I was able to visit the small town of Canton, NC and nearby Maggie Valley, NC. I also was able to drive the famous Blue Ridge Parkway, where panoramic views and scenic overlooks delighted me. The beauty of the North Carolina mountains is unparalleled, and Mama Gertie’s provided the perfect basecamp for my adventures.
Fly Fishing with Asheville Fly Fishing Company
For outdoor enthusiasts, the Asheville Fly Fishing Company offers a unique opportunity to experience the thrill of fly fishing in the pristine waters of the Blue Ridge Mountains. I booked a guided fishing excursion and was paired with Evan. He was knowledgeable and very friendly. He was patient with me as I still am learning to fish and I talked his poor ears off!
